Look back: Lisbon
Two Lisbon replicas: well the bridge isn't supposed to be a replica of the Golden Gate Bridge, but it sure looks exactly like it. One difference is that the Lisbon bridge carries railway tracks on a lower level. On the hill across the river, a replica of Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue was a gift from Brazil.
Geburtstag Baskets
At Toys 'R Us in Frankfurt, if a child has a birthday coming up you fill these baskets with gifts the child wants and people show up, take items from the basket, buy them, and gift them to the child.
Ozoud Waterfalls
A look from above. The locals gave boat rides to the base of the waterfalls. Everything in Morocco is about making money, mostly from tourists.
Ozoud Falls
The Ozoud Falls in the mountains outside of Marrakech. It was a long and winding drive to get there and we had to defend ourselves vociferously from the touts but we were successful and got some beautiful shots of the waterfall.
Jardine Marjorelle
The Jardin Marjorelle in Marrakech is a garden created by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. It is a beautiful and quiet respite from the busy streets of Marrakech.
Last dinner of our trip!
At Steinernes Haus; Devin had jägerschnitzel, I had ravioli. The restaurant is in Frankfurt's oldest stone building, built when everything else was timber. The interior was destroyed in WWII but rebuilt in 1946.
Moxy Hotel
Out hotel in Frankfurt. Moxy is a new Marriott brand. Rooms are nice and clean with typical Marriott quality, but small and no frills. No room service, no desks, ironing boards, coffee pots, etc. All the stuff I never used anyway. Check in is at the bar in the lobby, which is the entire first floor with tables, board games, books, music, cafe, etc. The idea is that millennials (ugh!!) don't want to sit in their rooms, but congregate in a more social setting. I'm probably beyond the target age group, but I really liked it.
Wald Run
Went for a 10 mile run this morning in the 'wald' (forest) near our hotel near Frankfurt airport. In the dark! Doesn't get light here until 8am.

The Red City
Marrakech is known as 'The Red City' because a large number of its building are painted a similar reddish-tan or salmon color. It definitely has a desert look to it, but it's a bit monochromatic for me. Especially toward the outskirts where large apartment blocks are all the same reddish color, along with the soil and everything else.
Mercedes Taxi
The Mercedes Benz W123 model sold from the mid 70s through the mid 80s became in my mind the quintessential North African/Moroccan taxi. While this was my first time to Morroco, photos show the streets just flooded with these. There are a ton still in service, and I wouldn't doubt that many have mileage well into seven figures. These predate the Mercedes filled with buggy electronics, so they are supposedly rugged as anything. However, they are definitely outnumbered anymore at least in cities, by modern Romanian-built Dacia Logan sedans and Dacia Lodgy wagons (Dacia is owned by Renault). The Mercedes still seem to be the car of choice for grand taxis operating longer distances between towns.
Currywurst
It's become a Germany tradition for us: a first stop on arrival is a currywurst stand near the train station for a sausage in ketchup and curry powder, served in a paper tray with a roll. Delicious!

Leaving Morocco
At the airport, spending our last 40 dirhams (a little over $4) on coffees and a cookie, and filling out Moroccan departure forms.
Fill up!
Our diesel Peugeot 508 rental car only used about 3/4 of a tank of gas driving all the way from Tangiers to Marrakech, the slow way over the mountains. Total fuel cost was 518 dirhams, less than $60.
Medina
An arch in the medina. They actually allow bikes and motor scooters in the medina, which is really crazy.
